National Memorial Day: History, Concert, and Celebrations
The national memorial day is an American holiday which is observed on the last Monday of May every year. This day is celebrated to honour the lives of men and women who died serving for the US military. The national memorial day 2020 will be celebrated on 25 May.
History of National Memorial Day
The national memorial day was originally known as the ‘Decoration Day’ which originated in the years following the Civil War. It eventually became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans visit cemeteries and memorials to pay respect and love to their families on this day, while others participate in parades. This day also unofficially marks the beginning of the summer season.
The flag of the USA is traditionally raised briskly to the top of the flagstaff in remembrance of the people who died for their country. The flag is raised at noon symbolising that the memory of the dead soldiers is being raised by the living. It reminds the people that their lives did not go in vain and that they must honour and continue to fight for liberty and justice.
National Memorial Day Concert 2020
The National Memorial Day Concert is a free concert which is performed on the west lawn of the United States Capital Building in Washington DC in celebration of the national memorial day. The National Memorial Day Concert 2020 will be the first time that this concert will become a streaming-only event. It will broadcast live on PBS, NPR, and can also be seen overseas by U.S. military personnel in over 175 countries and over 200 U.S. Navy ships at sea on American Forces Network.

This concert is viewed by millions across the country and the world. It usually begins with the American national anthem by the National Symphony Orchestra and is then followed by music and dramatic readings which commemorate the holiday and its importance.
This holiday gets most people in the mood for long weekends. With Saturday and Sunday right before the big day, some people make plans for weekend trips or throw parties and barbecues
